Sosland Publishing is seeking a senior-level journalist for our biweekly publication, Milling & Baking News. This newly created position will collaborate with a high-performing team of experienced writers to provide our readers with essential information used to drive business decisions in the grain-based food industry.

• Contribute original editorial content and informative multi-sourced feature-length articles to be used across traditional print and emerging digital platforms.

• Identify unique story ideas with emphasis on business topics such as economic, legislative and market trends.

• Interview key members of the grain-based food industry to generate business focused news content covering financial results, emerging business leaders, and the business factors that influence the success and challenges of the industry.

• Establish, develop and maintain sources to provide relevant and compelling insight into the grain-based food industry.

• Establish presence in the industry as a skilled journalist and subject matter expert.

• Edit content for accuracy, quality and style.

The Ideal Candidate

• Excellent researching, interviewing, writing and editing skills.

• Ability to analyze, discuss and write about market activity and the financial and economic impacts of industry behaviors.

• Ability to write informative news, profile, merger/acquisition, earnings reports and feature stories from a business perspective.

• Proven ability to meet deadlines.

• Self-starter with instinctive ability to lead others.

• Skilled at using MS Office products (Word, Outlook, Excel) and Adobe InDesign.

• Willing and able to travel – must participate in industry events and trade shows in addition to occasional travel for story assignments.

• Insatiable curiosity and interest in the grain-based food industry.


• Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, English, Economics, Business or related discipline.

• 10+ years of writing experience in a journalistic/reporting news format.

Position Overview

This position is tasked with providing creative solutions as assigned for editorial print products, in-house advertising creation for print publications, design and production of e-zines, digital ads and other special projects that are companion pieces to parent publication, promotional material or other projects as assigned.


· Collaborate with design, marketing, and editorial teams in a positive and proactive manner to explore unique, interesting, and professional B2B design solutions for use in print editorial, print promotions and online components

· Understand the B2B publication industry and how to tailor designs to a specific publication and audience

· Ensure proper brand usage, quality of design, integrity of images and adhere to minimum image standards of quality and size for print and digital implementation.

· Execute production or creative projects as assigned to meet deadlines, support fellow designers, and allow for a balanced workload within the design team.

· Honor requests from Editorial/Sales/Circulation/Digital/Promotion departments as assigned by the Design Manager.

· Maintain and distribute publication layouts and production updates in a timely and efficient manner.

· Monitor digital design trends, suggest execution opportunities, and implement when approved.

· Attend and contribute to weekly editorial/design/marketing meetings as scheduled

· Participate in QC reviews, proofing and correction processes and trafficking of pages as needed.

· Maintain design style and procedure as noted in Process and Procedure (P&P) files as well as update and maintain P&P files monthly.

· Contribute to the Design Inspiration and Learning repository with design ideas, software tips, tricks, updates and more.

The Ideal Candidate

· Strong knowledge of print production including prepress, terminology, typography and color theory

· Ability to execute clean layouts

· Ability to brainstorm, sketch ideas, and collaborate

· Ability to create and adhere to design templates

· Capacity to create visual data stories

· Qualified to manipulate and color correct photography as needed

· Ability to multitask and address issues in a professional, and confident manner

· Excellent time management and organizational skills

· Considerate and timely communication skills

· Attention to detail and quality control standards, traditional proofreading is a plus

· Ability to collaborate well in a team setting

· Ability to work remotely with moderate guidance and occasional in office collaboration days


· College degree in graphic design or related field

· 2+ years of print design experience; preferably in magazine production

· Advanced level Adobe Creative Suite software user, specifically InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator

· Competency in a PC computer environment

· Intermediate Microsoft Office software user

· Experience with multimedia/digital content creation including basic animation techniques (HTML, HTML5, CSS – Experience with interactivity a PLUS)

· Ability to create interactive charts, graphs, and maps

· Implementing Tracking Codes

· Integrating Interactive Elements with Websites (these can include chat rooms, discussion forums / message boards, contact forms, order forms / shopping carts, and appointment calendars)

· Capable of integrating interactivity into flipbooks

· Illustration and photography skills a plus

The Sales Manager will develop and implement a strategy and tactics to increase effective prospecting and new revenue generation across brands. This includes being responsible for developing and implementing sales training, CRM training and deploying sales strategies focused on revenue growth across all publications. The successful manager will analyze and leverage CRM data to empower sales representatives to develop successful sales tactics, improve product knowledge and enhance profitability.


· Collaborate with publishers to understand the objectives, strategies, and goals of each sales channel.

· Conduct training program evaluations, communicate key performance indicators, develop targeted sales strategies.

· Develop and implement a sales training program to include sales competencies to support growth.

· Identify opportunities to continuously improve and execute updates.

· Leverage CRM data to demonstrate customer buying trends, sales opportunities and overall sales performance.

· Create reports, graphs and visual elements using CRM data to highlight sales trends.

· Assist in the creation of sales proposals and presentations that resonate with clients.

· Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices in sales.

· Foster a culture of accountability and growth within the sales team.

· Maintain strong product knowledge to enable persuasive cross selling strategies.

Individual Sales (after processes and strategies are in place/potentially year 2 or 3)

· Manage a book of business to drive client satisfaction and revenue.

· Solicit new and existing accounts to meet and exceed revenue goals through telephone prospecting, outside sales calls, industry event management and written communication.

· Foster strong relationships with clients and customers to understand their needs and preferences.

· Attend industry events to network, build relationships, and learn about trends in the industry.

· Attend sales calls and plant visits to gain an understanding of customer operations and needs.

· Collaborate closely with marketing team to align strategies and campaigns.

· 5+ years management and training experience

· Experience using CRM to manage the sales process and optimize the customer sales journey to create an actionable pipeline

· Knowledge of B2B food industry is a plus
